May 20, 2020 I have a Mac mini (2014) model and yesterday I bought a Samsung T5 meaning to install Catalina on it and run macOS over USB. I 'restored' the SSD through Disk Utility and the first time I booted from the Disk Manager it worked fine. Everything worked, had all my files and applications. After a reboot I can't get it to boot from the SSD. I was able to make a macOS Sierra external USB boot disk in a few minutes, and the installation worked without a hitch. Also works with older versions of OS X. Diskmaker X is a popular app. Aug 30, 2017 Boot into Windows from external Boot Camp drive. Step 33: Open System Preferences → Startup Disk. Use the 'createinstallmedia' command in Terminal
- Connect the USB flash drive or other volume that you're using for the bootable installer. Make sure that it has at least 12GB of available storage and is formatted as Mac OS Extended.
- Open Terminal, which is in the Utilities folder of your Applications folder.
- Type or paste one of the following commands in Terminal. These assume that the installer is still in your Applications folder, and MyVolume is the name of the USB flash drive or other volume you're using. If it has a different name, replace
MyVolume
in these commands with the name of your volume.

You can now quit Terminal and eject the volume.

- Select Install macOS (or Install OS X) from the Utilities window, then click Continue and follow the onscreen instructions.
